Fishes of Canada's National Capital Region
Habitat Photographs
The National Capital Region (NCR) encompasses an area with a radius of 50 km centred on the Peace Tower of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. All its waters drain to the Ottawa River which flows into the St. Lawrence River at Montreal and thence to the Atlantic Ocean. The Ottawa River is the major water body, roughly splitting the area into northern and southern halves. The northern half lies in the province of Québec and the southern in Ontario. The two halves have contrasting land forms. Ontario is more heavily populated with Ottawa and its suburbs, flat farmland and only one small lake (Constance Lake). The Québec side also has a concentration of population along the Ottawa River but outside this area (Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau from upriver to downriver, now collectively one city, Gatineau) the land is hilly with numerous lakes, comparatively little farming but many cottages surrounding the lakes. Gatineau Park lies just to the northwest of Ottawa-Gatineau and large tracts of this park have limited access for people while other areas have bathing beaches and fishing areas.
